Homestay In Ghana PDF Print E-mail
The Home stay program is integral part of all IYEP programs. Participants live and share common values, cultures and ideas with the host family. This has proven to be the most effective means of understanding others from different cultural backgrounds. Since the concept was introduced by the Experiment in International Living in 1932, the home stay program has thus been very successful with more and more participants seeking to have first hand experience of cultures around the world and may opt to stay with families in the host culture. In Ghana, the experiences of our participants have helped to offset the many stereotypes often found in news media Channels. The expressions of love, care and understanding shared by host families and participants become a vehicle of life changing experiences. Life in Africa is no more degrading but just different and this is to the credit of insightful knowledge the home stay affords during meal sharing, exchanging of ideas at the dinner table and learning to hand-wash clothes. Quotes by host families and participants here add picture of students and family. “I can honestly say that this was the most valuable experience of my life. The things I learned about the goodness of people and about myself are invaluable and I’ll never forget the time I spent here, and the people I’ve grown to love.” –Kaitlyn Thiry, 2009. “I had such a great time. This was great for my first time out of U.S.A.”- Hannah Gardiner.2009
